Safari Game Drive on the West Coast Near Cape Town

Quagga & Safari Game Drives

L'Ermitage Quagga Lodge is the proud home of approximately 40 Quaggas, which has been rebred out of extinction. We also have a couple of other rare species roaming its plains. These include the Blonde Wildebeest, Blonde Gemsbok (Oryx), Sable, Springbok and Buffalo. The Berg River estuary is also an important bird habitat, home to around 30,000 birds. Daily Game Drives will be available for our guests, offering a rare opportunity to see these beautiful animals in their natural habitat.

Canoeing | Kayaking

Bring your own Canoe | Kayak or hire a canoe at reception and paddle along the river. This is a relaxing paddle suitable for the whole family. The Berg River is home to thousands of waterfowl every spring and when the veld explodes in spectacular flower displays in late winter months.

The annual Berg River Canoe Marathon is in the first week of June

The Berg River flowing in front of the chalets is a birders' paradise. The tidal action between the ocean and the river causes tidal flats and thus creating some of the multiple habitats that makes this one of the very best birding areas on the Western Coast of Southern Africa.

Fishing | Berg River and Estuary

This lower Bergrivier is a rich source of a large variety of fish during both seasons, both of fresh water and of salt water. Creating good fishing conditions for carb & catfish. In summer, species like Elf, Steenbras, Garrick, Cod, Bar, Mullets may be caught.

Berg River Estuary

Rated as one of three top estuaries in South Africa, in terms of conservation, the Berg River Estuary starts 69 km upstream of its mouth in Velddrif on the Cape West Coast. It is one of only four perennial estuaries on this dry coast and its lower reaches are an Important Birding Area (IBA) – it supports 210 species of bird, 25 of which are nationally important, whilst up to 80% of the fish in the estuary use it as a nursery.
